What a great party we had this afternoon as we celebrated our new mural! Artist Kris Friesen and mural committee member Amy Campbell shared the history and fulfillment of the dream for a mural on the wall of Wheeley Hall. Esquimalt Mayor Barb Desjardins brought kind words from the Township of Esquimalt, and Brooke Maxwell joined with local friends Matt Pease, Chris Frye, and Peter Dowse to form the latest version of the The Neighbourhood Hootenanny Time Machine - GROUP to provide a couple hours of dancing in the street. Special thanks to Amy, Barenda, Susan and Gary, and recent ministers Leanne, Faye and Laura who shepherded the mural from a dream years in the making to the beautiful results today. And we wouldn't have anything to celebrate without Kris!
We Love Esquimalt, and are so happy to be able to share this gorgeous mural with everyone who passes by.
Our mural planning team says the following about the mural and its sybolism:
The mural team at Esquimalt United Church wanted to incorporate the themes of
hospitality, inclusivity of all, and caring for the planet. We also hoped to be
Public, Intentional and Explicit. (P.I. E.)
Our chosen muralist, Kris Friesen did a master’s work, bringing our vision to life.
The symbols of salmon, eagle, deer, canoe and the orange shirt, were included
with respect to and for the First Nations communities in our neighbourhood.
The river, sky, old growth forest and garden, represent our desire to care for
creation.
The people in the garden are diverse in ethnicity, age, gender, ability and perhaps
even status, representing our theme of inclusivity.
Esquimalt City Hall represents our deep love of this community of Esquimalt.
The lighthouse, Bickford Tower, represents a beacon to so many. It is a beacon of
welcome to sailors each time they return to CFB Esquimalt. The tower is located
on the base, overlooking out towards Esquimalt Lagoon.
